Author:

Rating: 8/10

I attended the premiere of Labor Day at the Toronto International Film
Festival. Most people walked in expecting a Juno/Up in the Air style
comedy and if that's what you expect you'll be mildly surprised. The
film is darker that Reitman's usual works though you still recognize
the director's touch.

The movie tells the story of Adele (Kate Winslet), a woman who slowly
shut herself off from the world, relying heavily on her young son Henry
(Gattlin Griffith), whose father abandoned them to another wife and
other children. Enters a menacing escaped convict (Josh Brolin) who
finds refuge with Adele and her son as he tries to remain hidden from
the police.

The summary will have you believe that 'the mother and son gradually
learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.' or
that the family realizes they're now prisoners in their own home which
makes it sound like the movie is going to be some sort of Panic Room 2
but the story is nothing like that. As Adele and her son get to know
the prisoner, they both find the family they've been longing for.

It's a beautiful story despite being somewhat implausible but I found
what mattered wasn't the story we see, so much as witnessing the
characters finally having a shot at happiness and how the remainder of
their days is shaped by this weekend they spent together. This film
isn't driven by dialogue as much as Reitman's other films were. The
director has said in interviews that he found it challenging to do a
movie where there was little dialogue (he actually said without music
or dialogue and I walked in half expecting to see a silent film.) He
worked around it by having Tobey Maguire narrate the film as an older
Henry. The narration works though I think the film could have done
without it as well. Don't let the whole 'silent' thing keep you from
seeing this film, I found there was enough dialogue, and there is music
as well though unlike Juno it doesn't play as a whole hipster
soundtrack.

The movie is more subtle yet more raw, slower than his usual films and
it lets the actors take us through every emotion. Kate Winslet is a
terrific actress and she gave a beautiful performance as Adele, very
convincingly portraying a woman who's given up on living. Josh Brolin
was great as well, giving us both a tough convict and a soft hearted
man at times. Gattlin Griffith was great at a kid who grew up faster
than he should. I'm always very iffy when it comes to child actors but
he pulled it off very well.

In conclusion, Labor Day is a different, more adult and more mature
film from Jason Reitman. It's a nice transitions from his previous
comedies and goes a bit deeper than his other films, bringing tension,
tears and some laughs. Whether you're already a Reitman fan or not, I
recommend this film, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Let's get the good parts out of the way first:

- Chris Pine.

OK, now that we got that out of the way…WHAT THE HELL, JACK RYAN
SHADOW RECRUIT???

Listen, in going over what really bothered me about this movie, I sort
of have to spoil some of it. So, before I do that, let me just quickly
summarize: Chris Pine proves himself as a good, maybe even great action
lead, but the story is so bare-bones and straight-forward (and at
times, stupid) that Pine's performance is really the only justifiable
reason to watch this. Shaky cameras during fight scenes DO NOT help the
cause either. (Seriously, this is such a pet peeve when it comes to
action movies, why do we still deal with this?) Jack Ryan: Shadow
Recruit scores a 2.5 out of 5 on The BDBOS.

Now, take this as your warning: BEYOND THIS POINT WILL BE SPOILERS.
READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Show of hands…how many of you guys out there have seen the trailer
for this movie? The trailer hints at – and by "hints at", I mean "beats
you over the head with" – the idea that no one can be trusted.
Specifically, the trailer shows Keira Knightley's character (Jack
Ryan's love interest) apparently betraying Jack. The trailer also shows
Kevin Costner's character (Jack's mentor and superior) aiming at Jack
through the scope of a sniper rifle. Even the movie poster has the tag
line "Trust No One". So, you'd figure going in that you're in for some
serious double-crossing and not knowing who's on Jack's side, right?

No.

Literally, there is NO DOUBLE-CROSSING WHAT-SO-EVER in this movie. The
good guys from the beginning stay good the whole way through. Same with
the bad guys. As a matter of fact, there are way more people in this
movie you CAN TRUST than there are of the opposite. Apparently, the
"trust no one" warning was meant for the villain, since he's the only
one that gets deceived in any way. The line should have been "Trust no
one…if you're a terrorist."

Still not sure who to trust? There's another easy way to figure out
who's good and bad in this movie, and all you need is this simple
equation: American=good. Not American=bad. Again, a better tag line
would have been "Trust no one…unless they speak perfect English
without any foreign accent."

Now, some questions…

- If you're an assassin, and you're only job is to kill this
guy…shouldn't you be killing the guy at your first opportunity? Or
your second? Or third? And not HOURS LATER, after the guy learns that
you're carrying a gun?

- If you're a different assassin, and you've already used your
trademark knife to kill a few other people…where was your knife when
you had to fight the hero? Who was UNARMED during the fight???

- If you've had severe spinal surgery, and went through months of
intense rehab just to be able to walk again…and, for argument's sake,
you're on a speeding motorcycle that SLAMS into the side of a van…how
are you then able to get up, walk away, and continue to chase the bad
guy???

- Will they let ANYONE into your hotel room if they simply claim to be
your wife? Without ANY sort of proof??

- Is Jack Ryan the SMARTEST PERSON EVER??? Because everyone else in the
CIA seem like morons.

- How many people did they send to Moscow for this mission??? It seemed
like there were 47 people on the street that were all in on the
operation, and yet the inexperienced financial officer who had
reconstructive spinal surgery and never killed anyone is the guy they
send in for ALL the dirty work.

Listen, with action movies, you're often asked to suspend disbelief for
the sake of enjoyment, but Shadow Recruit took too many liberties for
my liking. And, after all the promotion for the film, I left the
theater wondering if I saw the right movie. "Trust no one…except
everyone."

Chris Pine, this wasn't your fault.

2.5 out of 5. Pass on it.

(Hey guys, thanks for checking out my review. If you enjoyed it – or
even a tiny bit of it – then perhaps you'd enjoy checking out my little
Surly, an adjective and a name apparently, embarks on an adventure to
obtain food for the approaching winter. He runs across some wacky
characters and antics ensue. The Good: Art- The time spent on the
animal and human designs was readily apparent throughout the film. I
could pick out individual hairs in the animals' coats. I also liked
that the artists paid attention to the animals' mouths. They were not
just mere flaps of skin covering teeth, but it looked like the mouth
region actually had some depth, that the lips were also 3D along with
the rest of the animal. The humans had a distinct look and style about
them that made me think of 2D cartoons. Big and imposing, shady and
dangerous, cute and cuddly, the artwork certainly helped draw a person
in. Ambition- The Nut Job tried to draw on several genres of film. It
attempts to reshape these stories and form into a family friendly
movie. I could spot a crime drama, a voyage of self discovery, a tale
of redemption and rejoining society, just to name a few. The film also
provided some rudimentary information about the animal species through
dialogue, so it did have some educational moments. Whether or not the
film succeeded in its ambitions will be covered in the not-so-good
section. The Not-So-Good: Pacing- What a colossal mess. The Nut Job is
a short 86 minutes and the film tried to show at least three different
story arcs. The audience is not shown how the characters will respond
to any event because the next event is following hot on the heels of
its predecessor. Because of this, any connection or concern for the
characters is lost in the fray of action and fart jokes…yes, I'll get
there too. Characters- Unfortunately the pacing of the film allows the
survival of only the most basic character types. Might as well forget
about character development too. And learning. And change for the
better. Comedy- I had hoped that the family film genre had grown past
this, I really did. Situational and character-based comedy has made
significant headway into the family films. Granted it may be a little
silly to laugh at Mr. Potato-Head's parts stuck in a flour tortilla,
but I found it to be incredibly funny. Or how about when a mermaid
becomes a human and, as a result of misguiding information told to her
in a previous scene, she puts a fork and a pipe to hilarious use at the
dinner table. Fart jokes. Maybe with the compressed story arcs, the
only form of comic relief could come from this. The Nut Job tried to
meld several different genres and in so doing, did not execute any of
them well. You've seen better representatives of the genres attempted
here and I'd suggest seeing them instead. 4/10

Rose Hathaway is a dhampir, half-vampire and half-human, who is training to be a guardian at St Vladimir's Academy along with many others like her. There are good and bad vampires in their world: Moroi, who co-exist peacefully among the humans and only take blood from donors, and also possess the ability to control one of the four elements – water, earth, fire or air; and Strigoi, blood-sucking, evil vampires who drink to kill. Rose and other dhampir guardians are trained to protect Moroi and kill Strigoi throughout their education. Along with her best friend, Princess Vasilisa Dragomir, a Moroi and the last of her line, with whom she has a nigh unbreakable bond, Rose must run away from St Vladimir's, in order to protect Lissa from those who wish to harm the princess and use her for their own means.

I too walked into the movie thinking it was some sort of twilight based
movie. However, I enjoyed the overall film for its outlandish humor and
lead actress. Some parts where a bit shocking but nothing too far from
crossing over a certain line.

I have never read a single book of this series; although the movie does
a wonderful job explain exactly what is going on and who everyone is.
Vampire academy from times gave us teen angst and did over sexual most
of its cast in some scenes. So if they are planning a sequel please
don't shove sex right in our faces. It thought it was a movie that had
potential to be a bit darker than just being only surrounded by high
school problems. But the whimsically teen side didn't keep this movie
from the mild gore. I would rate this movie an 7/10. Would I watch if
there was a sequel? The answer is yes because this first movie attempt
wasn't as big of a letdown as I had anticipated. The next movies if any
have the possibility to break away from the usual "Teen Drama" and not
hold back on the blood and guts.

If this franchise doesn't want to be compared to twilight I suggest you
not make it the usual storyline. Girl and two guys, the two guys want
her, she is mortal and they are supernatural, not blood all glitter. So
overall this movie had wit, spunky humor, mild gore, provocative
scenes, high school drama, and fangs. An overall good recipe so far for
the freshman vampire movie, word to the wise for the sequels if any,
just step it up and leave us wanting more.

emergency room doctor.

While Jason and Daniel are happily swinging singles with their rosters
of girlfriends, Mikey has just been told by his wife that she wants a
divorce. All three guys promise to each other that they would all
remain single together.

Unknown to his friends though, Mikey strove to revive his marriage with
wife Vera (Jessica Lucas). On the other hand, Jason meets and gets
close to a new girl Ellie (Imogen Poots). Daniel begins to see his BFF-
and pick-up partner Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) in a different light. Can
all three yuppies actually keep steadfast in their fraternal pledge?

Zac Efron is undeniably fit for this charming yet shallow and arrogant
character. It seems though that he had a step backward from his serious
portrayals in "The Paper Boy" and "Parkland" to find himself in rather
embarrassing scenes in the first third of the film (they were funny
though). However, in the final third, Zac was more in his element. His
final monologue alone reaffirms his status as romantic lead. This was
despite my opinion that his Jason and Ellie do not really jive
together.

Miles Teller plays the raunchy, noisy, annoying friend here. He is the
funniest and the most relaxed of the three main actors. He remains very
likable despite his smart-alecky character, coming across as a young
Andrew McCarthy. His chemistry with his partner Mackenzie Davis was the
best of the three pairs in the film.

Michael B. Jordan is fresh from his acclaimed performance last year as
an ill-fated ex-con in "Fruitvale Station". His character is the most
stable of the three friends, and his character does not really get too
idiotic situations. He finds himself in more dramatic than comic
moments here, which makes his character feel like an odd man out.

The comedy aspect was only occasionally hilarious when an actor makes a
total fool of himself. There are two big comedy gimmicks here that will
make this film memorable. One was when they show Zac and Miles try to
pee while Viagra was still on full effect. The other was when Zac goes
to Ellie's birthday party with his awkward sense of "dress up." Other
than that, nothing really funny, more of annoying, grating and forced.

The romantic aspect fared better. It was actually quite well-written,
though treading on very familiar ground of male-female relationships
and commitment phobia. When is going out just simply going out? The
film was quite frank on scenes and language of a sexual nature though,
with scenes of semi-nudity of the three actors. I was surprised to see
this rated only R-13 locally. This should at least be an R-18 for me
because maturity is required to properly understand this aspect of the
film.

Based on a true story – that is the most haunting part of this film.
From the title and story itself, audiences already know what the
inevitable ending will be, but through the determination of the four
brothers, you can't help but hope for a change in their fates.

At its core, Lone Survivor is an American war film. The team members
are heroes, the Taliban are enemies, and the heroes are able to fight
on like in video games or movies. For the opening 40 minutes, it is a
somewhat cheesy show of soldiers bravado and training, but it works.
Incorporating real footage of the Navy Seals mixed with the actors lets
viewers feel for the real life persons and their portrayed characters
in the film. Soon after though, they are dropped into enemy territory
on an operation to take out a Taliban leader. The mission goes awry
when they encounter a small group of locals there, and they are faced
with the decision of killing them and letting go. From here, the
intensity begins to climb. What is the right thing to do? What would
you do? Faced with that moral situation, they decide to cut them loose
- soon after, Taliban forces are hot on their tail.

The next 40 minutes or so are an action-packed, non-stop brutal war
scene. Tension builds as a scope lines up with an enemy head. The shot
is fired, blood flies, and the chase begins. With an abundance of slow-
mo shots, clear close-ups of kills and wounds, the excellent direction
and cinematography provide a painful journey that makes you cringe or
tear up the same as the four soldiers. And all of these men in the film
play their roles greatly. Just listing them off – Walhberg tough as
usual, Hirsch strong and vulnerable, Kitsch pulling off the difficult
decisions as leader, and Foster frighteningly embodying cold but
caring.

These forty minutes of intensity must be attributed to the whole team
and crew though. Beyond the camera work and editing, much of the scenes
work well because of the locations, the costuming, the painful makeup
and design for all the wounds, the typical and tacky war-epic music.
The writing and delivery of lines keep the pacing quick and engaging.

Regardless of the how the majority of the movie is taken, the
conclusion of the film is a nice touch and shows – even with the bloody
action and cheesiness – what the film's really about: giving the story
of these men who served the country. Lone Survivor, while it can be
perceived as more American propaganda, still gives a brutal yet
touching look at this journey of four brothers through war. Yes, there
were tears. RATING: [8/10]

Anna, a fearless optimist, sets off on an epic journey – teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven – to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. From the outside Anna's sister, Elsa looks poised, regal and reserved, but in reality, she lives in fear as she wrestles with a mighty secret-she was born with the power to create ice and snow. It's a beautiful ability, but also extremely dangerous. Haunted by the moment her magic nearly killed her younger sister Anna, Elsa has isolated herself, spending every waking minute trying to suppress her growing powers. Her mounting emotions trigger the magic, accidentally setting off an eternal winter that she can't stop. She fears she's becoming a monster and that no one, not even her sister, can help her.

A lot of people criticize Frozen for what it isn't. Their preferred
setting, cast, etc. Not for what it is. It is an incredibly touching
story with fantastic music, score, script and performances by Menzel
and Bell we haven't heard in a long time. I took 117 nieces and nephews
ages 18 months to 14 and not once did any of them get up to ' go to the
bathroom' or get more snacks. Boys, girls were both drawn to the film
the whole time. The younger kids responded more to Olaf than the
thematics of it all.

The story centers more on the sisters relationship than a romantic one
and has a great message. I would recommend this to any family or Disney
fan.

You will be singing the songs over and over.

Fresh off of his hit stand-up comedy film, "Let Me Explain," Kevin Hart
returns to the big screen with "Ride Along." While it may be far from
the most memorable comedy, I can't help but admit I enjoyed sitting
through it.

Kevin Hart plays Ben, an eccentric man who wants to marry the love of
his life, Angela (played by Tika Sumpter). Before he does, he seeks to
get the blessing of her brother James (played by Ice Cube), a tough,
loose cannon cop. In order to prove he's worthy of marrying James'
sister, Ben must join James on a day on his job as an officer.
Eventually, the two get wrapped up in a case neither of them were
expecting.

As expected, the film plays out like a typical buddy-cop comedy: a cop
teams up with someone he doesn't like or agree with and the two have to
attempt get along. While this basic plot line has indeed been done to
death, this film makes the fortunate decision to skip out on many movie
clichés. There is no third-act-breakup, no mopey montage, and no
"you're off the case" or "you're fired" scene. While a lack of these
clichés does hamper the conflict, it is quite refreshing to see them
absent from the film. On the other hand, the script lends itself to
other flaws. Several scenes seem to be included for the sole purpose of
filling time (such as a random cameo by Jacob Latimore that amounts to
nothing). Moreover, the story can be very predictable at time, even
with a couple of random and nonsensical plot twists thrown in. Still
though, there is a lot of good to this film.

The dialogue, while far from quotable, is consistently funny and is
almost guaranteed to keep the theater laughing. The jokes are delivered
on a regular basis and never stray too far into campy or mean-spirited
territory. Unlike films like "Identity Thief" and "A Madea Christmas,"
the tone of the film never strays from a comedic romp and always keeps
the laughs coming.

Kevin Hart's performance itself is arguably worth the price of
admission. Hart's lines are delivered with the impression that he is
enjoying making this movie, and his high-energy presence is sure to
please his fans. If you are a fan of Kevin Hart, you will most likely
enjoy his screen-presence and his great chemistry with Ice Cube even if
you find the script to be lacking.

"Ride Along," may not go down as a comedic legend, but in my eyes, it
is certainly worth checking out at least as a rental. The flawed script
can indeed be overlooked by the gleeful dialogue and Kevin Hart's
enthusiasm. I'd say give it a shot, it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements. From director George Clooney, the film stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett.
Trivia:

Originally slated for a December 2013 release, with an awards/holiday season aim. In a rare move, Director George Clooney asked the studio for more time for post-production due to the special effects not being ready, knowing this would make it very unlikely to receive awards attention (uncommon for an early-year release). Reluctantly, the studio put it to the following February. See more »

Goofs:

The version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is sung with the lyrics “'Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.'' These lines were not added to the song until 1957. See more »

The Monuments Men is being too critically shunned. It is not what you
expect from watching the previews, but comes through with heartfelt
stories that are designed to show you what these men endured. Each of
The Monuments Men characters come from the arts world and are driven
into action by the need to save precious art works spanning across
Europe. Bill Murray is a genius per usual but lacks when it comes to on
screen time. I feel as though many characters like John Goodman are
overshadowed by the likes of Matt Damon and George Clooney. They make
themselves very prominent in the script but often take time away from
those who would truly make this film shine (Murray and Goodman). Even
though it is not as good as expected it shines in many scenes. I still
give it a 8/10

The stand out feature of the Lego Movie for me would be the way the
Lego Universe was created. The movie paid great attention to detail
making everything appear as it would made from Lego, including the
water and clouds, and the surfaces people walked on all had the circles
sticking upwards a Lego piece would have. Combined with all the yellow
faces, and Lego part during building, I was convinced action took place
in the Lego Universe.

A combination of adult and child friendly humour should entertain all,
the movie has done well to ensure audiences of all ages are catered to.

The voice cast were excellent, especially Liam Neeson's split
personality police officer, making the 2 personalities sound
distinctive, and giving his Bad Cop the usual Liam Neeson tough guy.

The plot is about resisting an over-controlling ruler, highlighted by
the name of the hero's "resistance piece". It is well thought through,
well written, and revealing at the right times. Full of surprises, The
Lego Movie won't let You see what's coming. Best animated film since
Wreck it Ralph! Please let there be sequels.
